a story i read

maybe a month of more ago, I read a story on facebook about a young married couple. after i read it, i felt that i could make it into a short film. it was a bit like the first part (10 min) of Pixar's UP.

the young wife, after 3-4 years of marriage decided to file for a divorce and gave the paper to his husband.

there were some details. in summary, the couple disconnected and their feelings diminished. there was basically just misunderstand that the wife thought his husband doesn't care about her anymore. like two ways of communication that didn't connect.

i want to find it so that i don't have to type it all out.

okay great, found it!

after Little Cheung by 陳果

I had a few ideas but i m having trouble remember, that's why you should always put them down. I need to get a good notebook or sketchbook.

Oh now I remember.

It seems I think of a lot of ideas while in the shower.
I was thinking about a story about African-American soldiers who came back from war and they felt mistreated even though they just fought with their lives for their country. They came back from war with a lot of their mates died or were wounded and found myself being second-class citizens despite of their sacrifices.

The story or the movie actually start with what happened to them after the war. They were on the street, just like any African-Americans or Black. They looked disgruntled, poor and unsatisfied. Then there came some flashback of the war. The flashbacks and other hints slowly reveal to the viewers that these were soldiers from war. Probably from WWI or WW2. They fought against Germans and were treated almost in equal in Europe, fighting with their white counterparts side by side and come back to a segregated society.

The big chunk of the middle part of the movie just before the end would be their time at Europe in the war. All out battle scenes, them fighting on the line, brothers, whites and black bounding, putting their lives on the line for one another. Maybe in the Pacific. I don't know. Need to do my research. It would be the glue. Then we see the atrocities of war. The wounded, the dead. Then we go back to their *present* as second-class citizen in USA.

I think it can be also made into a Aborigine version since there were Aborigines who fought for Australia in Europe.

The feeling they were having on the field would be that they were fighting for something noble. They didn't question themselves, but they do after returning.

There were the forgotten Australian Aborigine soldiers.

here are some information:

Aboriginals' significant role in WWI revealed

By Danny Rose

13 April 2004 - The names of more than 400 Aboriginal soldiers who served in World War I have been uncovered -- and many were from Tasmania's Bass Strait islands.

Canberra-based historian David Huggonson, who has spent 20 years researching the Aboriginal contribution to Australia's military campaigns, announced his findings yesterday.

Mr Huggonson said he had uncovered the names of 428 Aboriginal soldiers who served in WWI.

Flinders and Cape Barren islands provided the highest number of early Aboriginal enlistmensts.

They were also mostly from the Maynard or Mansell families who, Mr Huggonson said, had gone on to produce some of Tasmania's most outspoken Aboriginal activists.

"Few Australians are aware that Aborigines have served in every war that Australia has fought in since the Boer War," Mr Huggonson said yesterday.

"There are 428 names so far just for World War I, from every state of Australia.

"But I was surprised to see quite a few Tasmanians from Cape Barren Island and Flinders Island."

He said the figure of 428 Aboriginal soldiers who fought in WWI was significant, as Australia's Aboriginal population at the time was estimated to be about 80,000.

Mr Huggonson said army regulations at the time had banned anyone not of European origin from enlisting.

"It was only in May 1917 that an army order allowed the enlistment of 'half-castes' due to the shortage of volunteers and the carnage on the Western Front," he said.

Mr Huggonson said the Tasmanian Aborigines who served were most likely the children of European sealers and Aboriginal women.

He said it was important that the role played by Australia's Aboriginal soldiers was recognised.

"Federation occurred in 1901 but Gallipoli solidified Australia's nationhood, rather than being separate states," Mr Huggonson said.

"It is important to note that Aboriginal soldiers played a role in that."

Mr Huggonson's research continues and he specifically wants to identify a soldier from Cape Barren Island contained in an old photograph.

Anyone with any information on Tasmania's Aboriginal soldiers can contact Mr Huggonson by mail at: 12 Shore Place, Weston, ACT, 2611.

Australia's Aboriginals demand Anzac Day equality

Australians marked their most sacred national holiday in memory of fallen soldiers on Wednesday as Aboriginal veterans broke with tradition to hold a rival service and demand equality for "coloured" warriors.

Thousands of Australians and New Zealanders rose before dawn for candle-lit Anzac Day services in memory of their war dead 92 years after troops, or "diggers", from both countries landed at Gallipoli in Turkey in April 1915, suffering catastrophic losses.

But as medal-wearing veterans turned out for parades in cities and the smallest hamlets, around 300 Aboriginal veterans staged a separate "Coloured Diggers March" in Sydney.

"Over there in the heat of the battle we were one, we were brothers," organiser Pastor Ray Minniecon said.

"When a lot of our men came back from the war, they came back under the white Australia policy and they did not get the benefits of land grants or war pensions. It's those kinds of issues that are stored in our hearts."

Around 500 Aboriginals fought in World War One and as many as 5,000 fought on World War Two battlefields in Europe and in Asia, according to official records.

But they received little recognition when they returned home under policies favouring white Australians, and were not even counted as citizens until 1968. Pastor Bill Simon, who was to lead a church service following the march, said for too long there was a military tradition to "send the little black fella out to do all the hard work".

Australia's peak veterans association, the 240,000-strong Returned and Services League (RSL), said Aborigines had been a treasured part of Australia's military since Gallipoli.

"It's sad that it's deemed to be necessary by the indigenous community to have a separate march," RSL president Bill Crews told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The controversy did not mar regular Anzac Day services, with crowds of 30,000 turning up for dawn ceremonies in Sydney, Melbourne and the capital Canberra.

The eight-month British-led campaign involving Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) forces in Turkey was a disaster. Anzac Day was seared into the consciousness of both countries as a day on which war sacrifices would never be forgotten.

Services came a day after three Australian soldiers in Iraq were wounded by an insurgent roadside bomb.

Prime Minister John Howard said Australia's soldiers showed "mateship or larrikinism ... or sterling discipline when that was appropriate, and the willingness to risk all".

Howard urged Australians to visit the battlefields where their forebears died, with thousands expected at Gallipoli despite official warnings of a possible terrorist attack.

In New Zealand around 15,000 people gathered at Auckland's Cenotaph, while in Papua New Guinea, where Australians repelled Japanese invaders in a bloody 1942 battle, thousands held a service above rows of white tombstones.

In Afghanistan, Australian troops were given rare beers as their officers took up sentry duty as an Anzac Day treat.

Australia, a close US ally, has around 1500 soldiers deployed in Iraq, more than a thousand in East Timor and nearly 500 in Afghanistan helping battle Taleban insurgents.

It could be inferred that while Aborigines did not necessarily value fighting for the Empire, they were keen to fight for their country and families. This is evident in the fact that between 300 and 400 Indigenous Australians fought in World War I, defying the Australian Government and the Defence Act of 1909 which did not permit Aborigines even to enlist. It was not until the start of World War II that the Australian Defence Force permitted people who were not of 'substantially European descent' to enlist in any of the services. Once the restrictions were lifted, a number of Aboriginal men and women enlisted for service. It was too late, however, for those who wanted to show their patriotism by fighting for their country, and for the opportunity to be a part of the Anzac legend.

Australian Aborigines Commemorate Anzac Day

Aboriginal war veterans have marched through Sydney to highlight the sacrifices made by indigenous service men and women. The march coincides with Australia's Anzac Day (4/25), which marks the World War One battle of Gallipoli (in Turkey) in 1915. Many Australians believe their national identity was forged from the courage and spirit displayed by their troops during that eight-month campaign. From Sydney, Phil Mercer has more.

Indigenous Australians have a long history of military service. About 500 Aborigines served in World War I and as many as five thousand served during World War II.

They fought alongside other Australians, with the same conditions of service, and often encountered little prejudice on the battlefields.

It was a very different story on their return home. Aborigines faced racism and discrimination and were not allowed to become Australian citizens until 1948.

Warren Mundine from Australia's National Indigenous Council says indigenous veterans are under recognized.

"Prior to '67 many Aboriginals were not citizens of Australia which is a bizarre situation to be in and yet they had served. They've served in the First World War, they served in the Boer War, they served in the Second World War and many other conflicts," he said. "Vietnam. … Here they were going out and fighting for Australia then coming back home and living under the Aboriginal laws, the Aboriginal Acts where they were treated in an almost apartheid-type system. So these are the forgotten warriors of Australia. They're probably the greatest heroes of all."

The Anzac Day march Wednesday through the Aboriginal district of Redfern in Sydney attracted hundreds of people, and veterans with similar stories.

David Williams served as a sailor on the Australian vessel HMAS Vampire during the Vietnam War. He says that when he returned home from the conflict his service and sacrifice were ignored.

"Purely probably ignorance and the ignorance would deal with the fact that one you were black, two you weren't an Australian citizen and three, you know, who wanted to know you," he said. "I look back now in hindsight and I think, well, my goodness you never stood a chance as a black Australian."

The Anzacs refer to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, which suffered devastating casualties at the World War I battle of Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915.

It was the first time they'd fought under the flags of their newly independent countries.

Many Australians consider the ill-fated landing in Turkey as the day their young country, a former British penal colony, came of age.

Dawn services and marches have been held across Australia and New Zealand as well as among units of Australian forces serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
